In the fitness industry, there is typically 3 classifications of equipment durability:
- Residential: designed and warranted for home use. This equipment poses a liability to use in a commercial setting.
- Commercial: sometimes referred to as "Light Commercial", this typically means the equipment is designed and warranted for up to 5 hours of use per day in a non-dues paying facility.
- Full Commercial: equipment designated as full commercial is rated for use in a 24-hour access fitness facility, even one that charges memberships. This is the grade of equipment you'll find in most large chain gyms.
While any of the above equipment is appropriate for a home, it's important to consider the environment when purchasing and what liabilities may come with purchasing equipment that is not properly rated for its environment.
